A Flourishing Summer

Here is a wonderful video compiled by one of our volunteers, Kirk Glass, about the Super Giant Community Garden.

It features many of our activities during Summer 2014. Thank you everyone who came to the community garden this summer and continue to support educational gardening and healthy eating!

Our Garden was featured in an article in the Spring 2014 issue of Generation Response! Check it out below.

GRAND OPENING of Super Giant Community Garden!

Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed a wonderful Saturday at Super Giant Community Garden! SGCG kicked off an early spring by planting on Feb. 22nd to celebrate our Grand Opening. The Grand Opening had a fantastic turnout with over 80 attendees, including community gardeners and student leaders from M. Agnes Jones elementary school. Also in attendance were community organizations – Atlanta Community Food Bank, Reclaim It Atlanta, Atlanta ContactPoint, United Way CCNA, and even Atlanta citywide Councilwoman Norwood.

Everyone helped to prepare the raised beds for planting by filling each bed with layers of mulch, top-soil, and nutrient-rich compost. At the end of the day, seedlings and seeds were planted in 8 of 12 garden beds. Students from M. Agnes Jones elementary school led the way in planting a variety of healthy greens including spinach, arugula and plenty of herbs for the first harvest.

This is just the beginning for SGCG. Plans are underway for a greenhouse to expand the possibilities for microgreens that can be grown. This garden is also just one component of a broader vision for a Healthy Hub at this same location featuring Super Giant Foods, a health services and healthcare center, a laundromat, along with other local and essential services that together can help build a healthy community!

The Build

We would like to thank all the volunteers who came out on February 1st to raise and fill 6 beds for our garden.  Even though it was hard work, everyone learned how to build a garden bed.  This was a great day full of teamwork, learning, and, of course, dirt!

Groundbreaking Ceremony

On January 21st, we raised and filled the 1st bed of Super Giant Community Garden. We also dedicated our first plant, an apple tree, to US Congressman John Lewis. Here he is pictured with our project manager, Hugh Green, and owner of Super Giant Foods, Sam Goswami.

Click on the picture to the right to read about Congressman Lewis's visit to our garden, and HEAL's relationship with our community partner, Super Giant grocery store.
